Fiji’s draft constitution must reflect the overall desire and aspirations of the citizens of the country, says Papua New Guinea High Commissioner to Fiji Peter Eafeare.

Speaking to FijiLive Eafeare said they cannot offer an opinion as to why the government amended the Ghai draft however they would like to see that the finalised draft reflect aspirations and desires of the people as to how they want Fiji to progress in the future.

“It must have all the basic tenants of the bill of the bill of rights, it must guard against the integrity of people who are involved in parliament and it must also have a strong element of natural justice which is a critical and traditional part of any constitution,” said Eafeare.

He said after hearing all public statements including the Fiji President’s statement it is clear to them that the Fiji government is trying to draw positive elements of the Ghai draft in ensuring that the constitution will cater for everyone’s aspirations including having a free and fair election.

Meanwhile Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said they are progressing well with the draft constitution.

“We are in the process of putting in place a draft constitution before the Constituent Assembly and that we need to have a proper rules and regulations before elections,” he said.

The draft constitution is expected to be announced once the Constituent Assembly members are announced this month.
