Army in politics for love of country: Tikoitoga

Fiji’s Army have said they are only involved in politics because they love the country and do not want to see Fiji “deteriorate”.

“We don’t want to see Fiji deteriorate to the status of some of the country we have performed peace keeping in,” RFMF Land Force Commander Colonel Mosese Tikoitoga told FijiLive.

“We stepped-in because politics in Fiji was corrupting the whole country,” he said.

“I quote Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara’s words in 1987: “If I see my house burning, should I stand on the side and let it burn or should I move and put out the fire.”

Tikoitoga reaffirmed the RFMF’s role to oversee and ensure national security and safety of Fiji residents as stated in the new draft Constitution.

“The RFMF stands as an institution, to carry out our roles as defined in the upcoming constitution,” Tikoitoga said.

Under the new constitution RFMF has the overall responsibility to ensure at all times the security, defence and well-being of Fiji and all its residents.
